Blood refusal kills parturients

Two pregnant women died during the current month in the delivery room of the Irene Neto Maternity Hospital in Lubango, due to the relatives not having authorized the medical teams to carry out blood transfusions to the parturients, for religious reasons, informed the coordinator of the programs of primary health care in the province of Huíla.
Regina Mauritius told Jornal de Angola that there are many people who take pregnant women to the maternity ward who need blood but who, because of their religious beliefs, prefer to sign a death sentence.
He explained that the purpose of blood transfusion, is to save lives, “But when it comes to a family member to take a disclaimer, saying that do not allow blood transfusions, citing religious principles, we hands are tied.”
He asked to whom, in the case of the Ministry of Justice, to pay particular attention to the situation of non-acceptance of blood transfusion by members of the Jehovah’s Witnesses Church.
Regina Mauritius said that blood banks are available in the municipalities of Cuvango, Quipungo, Caluquembe, Matala and Chipindo and Irene Neto Maternity, Pediatrics, Dr. António Agostinho Neto Central Hospital and Hospital Sanatorio.
