Jehovah’s Witnesses will pay millions of dollars to victims of abuse
A 21-year-old girl claimed to have been the victim of sexual abuse by one of the members of the congregation.
A jury condemned the Jehovah’s Witness Church in the United States to pay $ 35 million to a 21-year-old girl who claimed to have been the victim of sexual abuse by one of the congregation’s members in the state of Montana.
The woman and two other members of her family claimed to have suffered abuse between the 1990s and 2000s from a third relative, members of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
They claimed to have accused him before the clerics of that religious denomination, reported the AP agency.
Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of New York , the national organization of Jehovah’s Witnesses, handled the issue internally. In 2004 he expelled the alleged abuser , however, he reinstated him in the congregation the following year.
For its part, the religious entity plans to appeal the verdict, noting that the period of demand has already expired and that the state law exempts its clerics from reporting internal ecclesiastical procedures on a serious sin of a member of the congregation.
As for the fine, it is expected that it will be reviewed by a judge before it becomes effective.
