Jehovah’s Witness Church threatens to sue Bolsonaro’s aggressor’s lawyer

Legal department assures that Adelio Bispo de Oliveira has no connection with the church and wants retraction by statements that hurt image of religion

The legal team of the Jehovah’s Witnesses Church is evaluating the possibility of suing Zanone Oliveira Júnior, a member of the defense team of Adelio Bispo de Oliveira, the author of a knife attack on presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro (PSL).

Zanone said Sunday (9) that he was hired by a person who knows Adelio Bishop through religious practices, and suggested linking with Jehovah’s Witnesses. The church even released a note this weekend refuting the information. “The lawyer’s statement that he was hired by Jehovah’s Witnesses, as reported by the media, is not true,” the statement said in a statement.

According to a report in the newspaper O Estado de São Paulo, church lawyers have tried telephone contact with Zanone Oliveira, but so far they have not been successful. Faced with this lack of response, the legal department of the organization is studying to sue the  lawyer in court for helping, through their statements, to stigmatize the image of the church even more. “We abhor what the aggressor did,” the church’s press office told Estadão.

Also this weekend, Zanone said that the person who hired him lives in Montes Claros (MG), the city where Adelio Bispo lived, and that he prefers to keep his identity confidential. Three other lawyers are part of the defense of Bolsonaro’s aggressor.
Author of the knife attack last Thursday (6) during a Bolsonaro rally in Juiz de Fora (MG), Adelio Bispo de Oliveira , 40, is being held in isolation in a federal prison in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul. He was indicted on “personal assault for political nonconformity”, based on article 20 of the National Security Law.

Bolsonaro underwent surgery at Santa Casa de Juiz de Fora hours after suffering the attack and was hospitalized for Albert Einstein Hospital, in São Paulo, the following morning. According to the latest medical report released by the hospital, the candidate  remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit (ICU) and will need to undergo further surgery.

To O Globo newspaper, a representative of Jehovah’s Witnesses church, Aílton Pereira, asserted that the aggressor is not an adherent of the religion. “We are a quiet people, who preach love to our neighbors, people who are neutral in political matters, we regret the episode, an attack on one’s life.
